Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) refers to a phenomenon in which the human body ignites without any clear external cause.
Some accounts report that the individual at the center of the event appeared unusually calm and did not seem to be in pain during the process.
인체 자연 발화(SHC)는 뚜렷한 외부 원인 없이 사람의 몸이 스스로 불에 타는 현상을 의미한다.
일부 기록에서는, 발화의 중심에 있었던 인물이 그 과정에서도 이상할 만큼 고통스럽지 않아 보였다고 전해진다.
This season is set against a moment in which anxious discourses surrounding Korean society have become part of everyday life.
Amid an uncertain future, repeated evaluation and criticism, and a structure that places increasing responsibility on the individual, this sense of anxiety and pressure no longer appears as a temporary crisis but functions more like an environment. In particular, young people living in Korea in 2026—especially women—are positioned in a space where they must continually absorb and respond to social standards and expectations, adjusting and exposing themselves in the process. Under constant external scrutiny and pressure, anxiety and tension accumulate within the individual.
4TRESS visualizes this condition through the concept of Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC).
이번 시즌은 한국 사회를 둘러싼 불안한 담론이 일상화된 시점을 배경으로 한다.
불확실한 미래, 반복되는 평가와 비난, 그리고 개인에게 전가되는 책임의 구조 속에서, 이러한 불안과 압박의 감각은 더 이상 일시적인 위기가 아니라 하나의 환경처럼 작동한다. 특히 현재를 살아가는 청년들, 그중에서도 여성들은 사회가 요구하는 기준과 기대를 동시에 감내하며 자신을 지속적으로 조정하고 노출시키는 위치에 놓여 있다. 외부의 시선과 압력 속에서 불안과 긴장은 점점 개인의 내부로 축적된다.
포트리스는 이러한 상태를 인체 자연 발화(Spontaneous Human Combustion)라는 개념을 통해 시각화하고자 했다.
For 25AW, 4TRESS reads this Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) as a metaphor for the contemporary body and emotional state.
Social anxiety, evaluation, and repeated pressures function less like an external flame and more like a heat that slowly builds from within, gradually consuming the self. Even so, many people do not outwardly display this condition. They remain composed, continuing to perform the roles and rhythms expected of them. The combustion is ongoing, yet the surface remains relatively calm.
What this season seeks to capture is precisely this contradictory state: faces that remain composed while burning, bodies that continue to hold their form while being worn down. SHC is not presented simply as an extreme anomaly, but as an image that most compactly reveals the structure of tension endured by individuals living in the present.
Through this framework, 4TRESS aims to document figures who, even amid uncertainty, continue to maintain their form and presence in their own ways.
25AW 포트리스는 이 인체 자연 발화 현상을 현대의 신체와 정서에 대한 은유로 읽는다.
사회적 불안과 평가, 그리고 반복되는 긴장은 외부에서 가해지는 불꽃이라기보다, 개인 내부에서 서서히 축적되어 스스로를 태우는 열에 가깝다. 그럼에도 많은 이들은 그 상태를 드러내기보다 조용히 견디며, 자신에게 요구되는 역할과 속도를 유지한다. 발화는 진행되고 있지만, 표면은 비교적 평온하게 유지된다.
이번 시즌이 포착하고자 하는 것은 바로 이 모순적인 상태이다. 타오르고 있으면서도 담담한 얼굴, 소모되고 있으면서도 계속해서 형태를 유지하는 신체. SHC는 단순한 극단적 현상이 아니라, 현재를 살아가는 개인들이 감내하는 긴장의 구조를 가장 압축적으로 드러내는 이미지로 기능한다. 포트리스는 이를 통해, 불안 속에서도 각자의 방식으로 형태를 지키며 존재하는 인물들의 모습을 기록하고자 한다.
